Work camp ministry is a ministry of home repair for older people who live in poverty in Robeson County. This work helps us live out our Christian discipleship as we repair unsafe conditions for people who cannot do it by themselves.
Our work camp ministry staff seeks out people who live in inadequate, unsafe and unhealthy housing. Then we recruit volunteers who want to use their time to serve these people – all who live in Robeson County.
We build outside ramps for wheelchair access using pre-treated lumber and weatherproof material. We install indoor grab bars and handrails. We paint, replace old siding and underpinning and do other light carpentry repairs.
Work camping is an opportunity for you to put your faith into action: to display in a real, visible and concrete way -- no pun intended -- our commitment to a ministry of love, compassion and social justice. Work camping is also an opportunity to learn about the realities of living in poverty from the people whose lives are changed by our work.
As an ecumenical ministry, founded in 1969 through the Bishop’s Fund for Reconciliation of the United Methodist Church, we have a responsibility to take action in the face of human need and injustice. To use an old expression, through the Work Camp Ministry, we become the hands and feet of Jesus.
