DAY Four
Beginner’s Luck:
A First Timer’s Look at General Conference

The reason why I came, the new Division on Young People, is complete. Though it hasn’t reached the general floor, it passed through the Discipleship committee with full force. 88 in favor of concurrence, 0 not in favor of concurrence, 0 abstentions. Following the vote, other committees could hear the roar of applause come from the Discipleship room. We took five minutes or so just to recognize all the people who had worked hard on this piece of legislation.

The Division on Young People is a new mandate to allow voice for people between the ages of 12 and 30 in a general agency. The Division would cause the United Methodist Youth Organization to dissolve, as well as the Shared Mission Focus on Young People. Both of these organizations have supported this move and are even responsible for a good part of the authoring of this legislation.

After the legislation passed in Discipleship, a short recess was taken, which was filled with tons of phone calls, plenty of hugs, and even a few tears. It’s a day of celebration for all those involved and all of the United Methodist Church.
