DAY Two
Beginner’s Luck:
A First Timer’s Look at General Conference

Every doubt that I had about General Conference due to my confusion on the first day was completely washed away by the opening service of communion. From the African incense bearer to the Native American drummers; from the heavy accent of one of the African bishops to Bishop Minor (serving Russia) accidentally slipping back to his native German language; from singing a stanza of “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” with an Asian sound to it to the next stanza having a hint of “gospel rock;” the entire convention center felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in a fashion which may not have been so common. Despite the differences, the Universal God of peace and love could be seen on each and every smile.

The episcopal address was given. That had to have been a task to write. It was given an hour time slot on the schedule; I can see why. Business began. It continued. It continued some more. And it continued some more. The proposed plan from the Committee on Plan of Organization on Rules of Order concerning bishops’ chairing legislative committees was shot down but only by a slim margin of a hundred votes of so.

It’s been quite a busy day. The introduction of worship, plenary sessions, and legislative committees have been interesting and draining. I’m excited. General Conference has begun.

                                               Pumped,
                                               Ben Adams
