    Duke Day offers time of faith sharing and Christian fun
    A day of faith sharing and Christian fun will be held during Duke Day, sponsored by Conference United Methodist Men, on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.
    Featured speakers include Bob Harris, Dr. F. Belton Joyner, Jr., and Buddy West. This event will feature testimonies from athletes, worship, singing, and food.  The charge is $20.

    LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
    Duke Lay Academy offers seven morning and evening classes
    “Revelation” taught by Dr. Mickey Efird on Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, 7 pm at Resurrection UMC in Durham and “The Beatitudes: The Shape of Christian Living” taught by the Rev. Nathan Kirkpatrick on Oct 17, 24, 31, 9:30 am at Epworth UMC in Durham are two of the classes offered as part of the Duke Divinity School Lay Academy of Religion program.  For a complete list of classes, detailed descriptions: Duke Lay Academy .     “Spiritual Formation in Youth Ministry” workshop
    A workshop for adult leaders in local church youth ministry with the focus on spiritual formation in youth ministry will be offered at Englewood UMC in Rocky Mount on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 3-5 pm.  Respond to the Rev. Laura Dunlap at Englewood UMC ( ldunlap@nccumc.org ) with plans to attend the “Spiritual Formation in Youth Ministry” workshop
    The next offering of the “Spiritual Formation in Youth Ministry” workshop will be the Sanford District on Dec.9, 2007 and the Goldsboro District on Jan.20, 2008.

    Teaching the Wesleyan Model of forming disciples
    Mary Jane Pierce Norton, GBOD team leader for Family, Lifespan and Latino Ministries Team will be leading a workshop called “The Methodist Way: Living in Covenant with Christ and One Another.” It will take place at Daniels UMC in Goldsboro on Nov. 1, 10 am – 3 pm.
    Registration should be completed before Oct. 25.  The day will include hands-on practice, lecture, small group work and lunch. Cost is $15 for the day or $25.00 for the day plus yearly dues to the NC Chapter of Christian Educators Fellowship. Registration brochure available here: Educators Fellowship

    Seminar on effective disciple-making and equipping congregations
    A few spaces remain for “Shifting to a Culture of Equipping in your Congregation,” a one-day seminar on Oct. 30 facilitated by Charlie Halley, a layperson and executive director of Covenant United Methodist Church.  The seminar is for clergy and lay leaders from small, medium, and large-sized congregations who are seeking to learn how to become an effective disciple-making and equipping congregation.  Location: St. Mark's UMC, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh.  Time: 9 am – 4 pm. Cost: $49 registration fee includes lunch, copy of The Heart of the Matter by Halley, and course materials.  Register by email to brownlee@nccumc.org

    ANNOUNCEMENTS / GENERAL INFORMATION
    Youth group photos needed for Pilgrimage, registration deadline is Oct. 22
    Pilgrimage for UMC youth groups will be Nov. 9-11, 2007 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville.  The registration deadline for groups is Oct. 22.  The registration is in the 2007 Pilgrimage brochure which has been mailed to pastors and local church youth coordinators. The brochure is available on the website “Events” page at Youth Ministry .  Confirmation materials for registrations received will begin going out in mid-October.
    New for 2007 – The theme at Pilgrimage is “If We are the Body.”  Photographs, 8X10 or larger, of youth groups are needed for use on the stage visuals.  Send your best youth group photo to Youth Ministry, PO Box 10955, Raleigh, NC  27605 by Friday, Nov. 2.  No photos can be accepted by e-mail, no photo smaller than 8X10 will be accepted, and photos used cannot be returned.

    Suggestions for observing Veterans Day in worship  
    Veterans' Day (November 11) comes on a Sunday this year and some churches will include it as part of worship. An article offering a brief history of the holiday, suggestions for including Veterans Day in Christian worship, and resources from The United Methodist Hymnal and The Book of Worship can be found at GBOD Worship .

    Youth Service Fund Grants
    Applications for Youth Service Fund grants are due Dec.15.  The grants will be awarded in early 2008.  Applications must be from ministries that assist young people and would not represent typical youth group activities (such as mission workteams).  The application is available at the website:  Youth Ministry - select Youth Service Fund.

    Connectional giving DVD available
    “All Good Gifts,” a DVD of stories of United Methodist connectional giving, has 14 sections, ranging from 13.39 minutes to 1:48 minutes.  The DVD was available in material for Annual Conference members June 13-16.  Copies are also available from the Conference Media Center (1-800-849-4433) or e-mail Laura Bailey at llbailey@nccumc.org

    Resources on United Methodist giving available on Internet
    Resources for promotion of Special Giving Sundays authorized by the General Conference, are available at UMC Giving .  In addition to the Special Sundays, topics listed are General Church Apportioned Funds, The Advance, and 2007 Mission Moments.  Specific information about NC Conference is in the 2008 Mission and Service Commitments booklet which is in the November Advocate (insert and focus) or can be downloaded from Conference Publications .

    For clergy with a new Internet Service Provider
    Clergy changing Internet Service Providers are responsible for updating the forwarding option in their conference clergy e-mail account.  Notification of the new personal e-mail address is not needed in conference offices which will continue to send messages to the clergy conference e-mail address.     Potter's Hands video at Bishop's Day Apart
    The Potter's Hands video used by Irene Brownlee at the Bishop's Day Apart on Sept. 11 is available from churchmedia.net. There is a membership fee. The site offers additional videos and other media resources and ideas.  The GBOD Worship website ( Worship ) also provides a link to the service.
