    New manager at MERCI
    The Rev. Jim Huskins began work as program manager at MERCI on Tuesday, Sept. 4.  Huskins retired as a full-time pastor in June.  During more than 20 years as a pastor, he was active in disaster response/recovery and worked with MERCI, the center for conference disaster response.

    RESPONDING TO DISASTERS 
    Caribbean :  Hurricane Dean & Felix Response
    Hurricane Felix came ashore on Monday, Sept. 4, as a Category 5 Hurricane, the first time in recorded history two Cat Fives have made landfall in the same year.  It is feared that the death toll from Felix may be catastrophic.  Once again, your UMCOR will respond and will continue to provide assistance for long-term recovery.  Please give generously to support UMCOR's work through Hurricanes 2007, UMCOR Advance #982511 by simply placing a gift in the Sunday offering.  If mailing a check, along with the Advance name and number, note the church and district on the check and send to:  The NC Conference/Raleigh Area; Attention; UMCOR Advance #982511 - Hurricanes 2007; PO Box 60053, Charlotte, NC  28260-0053

    Response to Peruvian Earthquake
    In the recent earthquake in Peru, over 600 people were killed, an entire region was devastated, and many of our Methodist churches have been heavily damaged or destroyed at a time when they are needed the most.  You can respond to help alleviate the massive suffering.

    REMINDERS
    ZOE School Kit Packing Party!  You are Needed!

    Bishop's Day Apart
    Tuesday, Sept.11, Nashville UMC is the date and location of the Bishop's Day Apart for clergy under appointment.  Refreshments will begin at 9:30, program starts at 10 am. Box lunches will be provided.  The Day Apart will end around 3 pm.

    For pastors of small congregations
    The Summer Collegium, a project in support of small congregations, is now accepting applications for the Summer 2008 event, which will take place at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA, from June 25-July 3, 2008 .   This nine-day, all expenses paid conference for clergy and their spouses is open to those who pastor small congregations (100 or fewer average Sunday attendance) and are committed to small church ministry. There are 25 openings.
