    Spiritual Formation in Youth Ministry Workshops
    A workshop for adults in leadership of local church youth ministry to address spiritual formation in youth ministry will be held in the Raleigh District on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 am to 12 pm at Soapstone UMC and in the Fayetteville District on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 10 am to 12 pm at Hay St UMC in Fayetteville.  Pre-registration is not required (although it is recommended that the District Youth Coordinator of each district be notified of plans to attend) and there is no cost to the workshop.  This workshop has previously been offered in the Burlington, New Bern and Wilmington Districts.

    Methodist host 2 nd “Hot Summer Day 5K”
    The Methodist University Physician Assistant Program will be hosting the Second Annual “Hot Summer Day 5k” on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007. Event proceeds will go to the Dr. Harvey Estes Student Society of the Methodist University Physician Assistant Program, and a portion will be donated to The Care Clinic non-profit medical clinic in Fayetteville serving the uninsured and underinsured of Cumberland County.

    Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries Sunday is Aug. 26
    On August 26, Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries (DBOM) Sunday will be observed in the Churches of the WNCC and NCC and a Special Offering received.  DBOM has taught the Bible to 7,000 incarcerated men, women and youth in NC.  In addition, DBOM is bringing free Disciple Bible Study training to every UMC district in NC.   A great portion of DBOM's yearly needs are met through this Special Offering so every church's participation is vital to this ongoing ministry.  Envelopes have been packaged for each church along with a 5-minute DVD for use on DBOM Sunday.  These are now available for pick-up in the district offices.  Thank you for helping DBOM make disciples in the prisons and pews of North Carolina.

    Pilgrimage deadline for house band, testimony, other opportunities is Aug. 31
    The deadline for youth to apply for the house band or to give a testimony at Pilgrimage is Aug. 31.  Testimonies must be submitted in writing to senicholson@nccumc.org .  Applications for the house band are available by emailing senicholson@nccumc.org .  Youth groups wishing to offer an act of worship at Pilgrimage must also email senicholson@nccumc.org with name of church and brief description by Aug. 31 of the act of worship.  Youth groups wishing to offer a video to Pilgrimage must submit it to Youth Ministry, PO Box 10955, Raleigh, NC  27605 by Aug. 31.
    The application for the Award of Excellence in Youth Ministry deadline is Aug. 31.  The Award is presented at Pilgrimage in November.  The application form is available at the website:  Youth Ministry .

    Golfing pastors and/or friends of MERCI.
    Conference United Methodist Men have joined with MERCI to put on a fundraiser golf tournament at Lane Tree Country Club near MERCI and Goldsboro. Church groups and individuals are welcome to play on Thursday, Sept. 6.  Possibly you church would be willing to be a sponsor for a hole or another opportunity.  UMM groups are welcome to participate or to be a sponsor.  Proceeds will assist the MERCI ministry.     Safe Sanctuaries workshops for small churches
    A workshop to assist small churches with adopting and implementing a safe sanctuaries policy and procedures will be held from 3-5 pm on the following dates at the listed churches:  Sept. 9, Kenansville UMC, Goldsboro District; Sept.16, Scotland Neck UMC, Rocky Mount District; Sept. 23, Vass UMC, Sanford District; and Oct. 28, Helena UMC, Durham District.  Pre-registration not required.  This workshop will address the basics of safe sanctuaries for smaller churches with few to no children only.  Other resources to assist with safe sanctuaries are available at the website:  Safe Sanctuaries and in the Conference Media Center.

    Join UMM for Duke football and fellowship
    North Carolina Conference United Methodist Men will be gathering, along with sons and daughters, to watch ACC Tobacco Road football rivals Duke and Wake Forest, enjoy food and fun, listen to inspiring messages, and worship at the 3rd Annual NC UMM Duke Day on Saturday, Oct. 6.
    Bob Harris, the long time radio broadcaster for Duke, will share sports memories and experiences. Dr. F. Belton Joyner, Jr. will present a message and serve Holy Communion.  Music will be by Buddy Greene, musician and singer at First UMC in Cary.
    The cost is only $20 and includes game ticket, hamburger or hot dogs and drink, and a program. Registration is required on-line at NCUMM so sufficient tickets and food will be available. for participants. A commemorative t-shirt can be ordered on-line only.

    Can a movie be shown at a church gathering?
    Can movies on DVD or VHS be shown to church youth groups, child care, at retreats, in Sunday Schools, or during youth events?  Is it OK to use clips of movies in worship services? Can copyrighted music be recorded during worship services?  The answer: probably not and a license may not provide protection from court suits. It anyone has questions about recording copyrighted material, look at the information on the GBOD music Web site at Worship
