Conference Information

    Information about Annual Conference
    Annual conference materials were mailed to members last week. Registration can be completed by using and mailing the provided forms or by completing the process online at  http://www.nccumc.org/ac2007/information.htm .  Problems on the web server should have been corrected Monday afternoon, April2.  If attempts to register online were not successful, visit the site at other times. Online registration is preferred.  
    Resolutions to the North Carolina Annual Conference are due in the Office of the Conference Secretary by Thursday, May 10.  They should be in MS Word or Text formats and should conclude the names or individuals submitting the resolution, the church name, and whether it is from individuals, a class, church connectional circle or another group.
    Petitions to the 2008 General Conference are due by October 26, 2007.  Specific instructions must be followed:  General Conference Petitions .  (Acrobat Reader needed to open file).

    April Advocate mailed
    Read about new district superintendents, conference confirmation celebration, youth lay speaking and many other items in the April edition of the North Carolina Conference Christian Advocate.  Issues were mail last week.  To look at the front page: Advocate Frontpage

    Come to the Table: Food, Faith and Farms
    Join your brothers and sisters in Christ from across the state in three one-day regional conferences focused on the church's role in sustaining local agriculture and hunger in our communities.  Each one-day session will gather faith leaders, hunger advocates, farmers and others for conversations about how North Carolinians can honor the land and feed the hungry together. 
    Dates and Locations: April 10, St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Goldsboro; April 11, Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Orange County; and April 13, Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville

    EVENT DATES

    NCC Historical Society meets April 14
    The North Carolina Conference Historical Society will be meeting April 14, 10 am at Jenkins Memorial United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Anyone interested in the history of the NC Conference is invited to attend. Lynn James, executive director of the UM Foundation and a member of Jenkins Memorial, will be presenting a program about the history of the church and its past relationship with the Methodist Home for Children.     Conference Youth Rally Day
    Conference Youth Rally Day will be Sunday, April 22 at NC Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount from 3-6pm.  Youth groups do not need to register to attend however any youth group wishing to offer something in leadership of the worship service must sign up to do so by Monday, April 9!  Acts of worship such as dance or singing are needed for the offertory.

    For Such a Time as This Children's Ministry Resource Event
    A comprehensive resource event for all persons involved in children's ministry will be held April 27-28 at Centenary UMC in New Bern.  Two nationally noted United Methodists in Christian education and children's ministry will be resource people for the event.  A variety of workshops are being offered.  Please note:  the weekday workshop will NOT be held this year as workshops are being provided for those areas of ministry as part of this event.   The registration deadline (postmark date) is April 5.  The registration brochure is available at the website:  Children's Ministry .

    Day-Away for Older Adults planned for May 9
    The NC Conference Committee on Older Adult Ministries is sponsoring a day-away for older adults and those who work in older adult ministries on May 9 from 9 am-3:30 pm at Garner United Methodist Church. The theme for the day will be "Aging: A Spiritual Journey." The day will include worship, workshops, lunch with entertainment and display areas with ideas and resources. The registration deadline is April 18.     How to Develop a Coaching Ministry
    The Academy for Leadership Excellence is hosting a seminar led by Rev. Jim Griffith national expert in coaching, church planting, and transformational leadership processes on Tuesday, May 15, 9 am - 4 pm at Edenton Street UMC, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh.  Pastors seeking to enhance coaching skills; setting up a congregational coaching system; or coaching paid and unpaid church staff should attend.  Cost is $39 which includes lunch.  Register at ibrownlee@nccumc.org .  More information at:  Academy .

    CONNECT 2007 - SEJ UMVIM Celebration - Register On-Line
    CONNECT, a United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Southeast Jurisdiction annual event, will be held Lake Junaluska, June 27-29.  CONNECT allows participants to share experiences from their short-term mission trips, gain insight and resources from a variety of workshops, network with domestic and international projects and missionaries, and worship together during inspiring sessions that incorporate a diverse speakers and venues.  For more information and to register, please see: UMVIM .



    OPPORTUNITIES

    Project AGAPE Vehicle Need
    Several conference congregations have joined in an effort to provide Project AGAPE with a new vehicle for the important work of refugee relief.  A donor is willing to match half the cost of a vehicle.  $15,000 is needed for the purchase.  Send donations for this AGAPE Advance to:  Missions Office, 1307 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC, 27605.  Note on check - AGAPE Vehicle.  One hundred percent of your offering will go to this effort.

    Rural Church Key Taylor Award Nominations
    The NC Conference Missions Team invites rural churches to submit a nomination for the Key Taylor Award.  The award will include a $1,438.27 missions gift provided through the United Methodist Foundation for use in outreach ministry.  The purpose of this award is to call attention to the mission work of all rural churches by honoring the specific achievements of one rural church or one rural charge. 

    The criteria for the selection process is as follows:
    1.  The church is in a community of less than 1,500 people.
    2.  The church has 250 members or less.
    3.  The church is significantly involved in community mission.
    4.  The church shows faithfulness in its stewardship of the mission and service commitments (apportionments) and supports Advance Specials.
    5.  The church displays commitment towards growth in ministry and perseverance toward accomplishing their vision of ministry.

    Provide a one page description of church's mission work for the past year.   E-mail  submission to the Office of Mission, no later than April 30, and please copy to your District Superintendent.  Be sure to include church name and district.  The award winner will be announced at Annual Conference.  Email to:  beckybiegger@nccumc.org
