Linking finances with biblical values for building stronger communities
Faith and Money with Ched Myers is a rare chance to learn how personal, family, or institutional money can be linked with biblical values for building stronger communities. On October 14, beginning at 9 am until 4:30 pm. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Durham, educator and theologian Ched Myers will talk about "Sabbath Economics," the biblical call for all to use resources and assets so there is enough for all--otherwise known as "the kingdom" and "the beloved community." Cost of the day for materials and a meal is only $15. Ched will preach at Duke Chapel on the morning of October 15. Bishop's Day Apart canceled for October 17
With the cancellation of the October 17 Bishop's Day Apart, pastors and deacons are encouraged to attend the Convocation and Pastors' School at Duke University Divinity School in Durham, October 9-11.
Resource planning for families of persons with disabilities
A free workshop on resource planning for families of persons with disabilities will be held Saturday, October 21, 9 am - 12 noon, in Redhead Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro . This free workshop will cover Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security Disability, Trust Planning, a plan for care and issues related to providing a meaningful lifestyle for our physically or mentally disabled loved one. Living into Safe Sanctuaries Workshop with Joy Melton
Joy Melton, author of the books on safe sanctuaries and key leader in this area for the denomination, will be leading follow-up workshops on safe sanctuaries for churches having adopted a policy and begun implementation of procedures and safe practices for ministry. Workshops will be held on Friday, October 27, at Garner UMC and Saturday, October 28, at Queen St UMC in Kinston. The cost is $10 per person and pre-registration will be required (lunch is included). Partners in Wholeness: Congregations and Health Care - Seminar
A Partners in Wholeness: Congregations and Health Care Seminar will be held on October 26, 8:30 am to 3:45 pm, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Durham. Featured will be speakers on topics such as mental health in your congregation, health disparities among racial and ethnic groups, church leadership in mobilizing healthy communities, and end-of-life issues. Work team to D'Iberville, Mississippi

Church and Community Grant requests are due to the Office of Missions no later than October 31 to be considered for 2007. Fax copies are acceptable if followed with a hard copy. If grants are approved, funds will normally be distributed by the end March 2007. Duke Football Youth Day is November 4 - order tickets
Duke Football is sponsoring Youth Day on Saturday, November 4th.
Game time has not yet been set, but will be announced approximately two weeks prior to the game. Church youth groups can attend the Duke and Navy game at Wallace Wade Stadium for $10 General Admission per person. There will also be an inspirational pre-game speech by former Washington Redskin, Darrell Green, beginning two hours before game time.

Reverse mission team to La Esperanza Sheltered Workshop in Chile
Ten slots are available for a "journey inward - journey outward" with missionary, the Rev. Shana Harrison, April 20 - May 2, 2007. Each day will begin with communion and centering prayer. Mornings will be with the participants of the workshop. The afternoons will be filled with bible study, biblical animation, and visits to historical and contemporary sites where we might engage in considerations of justice. Evenings will be reflections of the lives of individuals in Christ as incarnational dwelling. Estimated cost will be $1250 for airfare and $500 for in-country expenses (may be some slight changes.) Palestine : Hardships continue in Gaza
The United Methodist Committee on Relief is working in Gaza to address the suffering from the recent war. The situation is dire. UMCOR has been working with Action by Churches Together to provide assistance to families in a program that, with appropriate funding, could expand to 6,000 - 7,000 families. This is in addition to free health clinics and educational assistance. UMCOR's funds for the Middle East are running low and currently cannot fully support these efforts. Furniture is needed to support a Burmese refugee family. Needed are a bed, mattress, kitchen table and chairs, davenport, small tables and television. A crib is needed for a two-year-old.
